Who will wipe away their tears? A call to end violence against children in Israel and Palestine is published by World Vision to document the tragic and devastating impact the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has had on all children in this region. When this document went to print in August 2003, a total of 549 children had been killed since September 2000. Thousands of others had been seriously injured and literally hundreds of thousands of children traumatised. Sadly, many more Israeli and Palestinian children have been killed in recent months.

The UN Convention of the Rights of the Child (CRC) reminds all world leaders of their responsibilities to protect children caught in conflict. The international community bears the responsibility to provide protection to children when the governments of those children cannot or will not. Clearly, the parties directly involved in this conflict and the international community have failed the children of this region.

World Vision hopes that this document will encourage the creation of a joint UN General Assembly resolution that would call for the protection of all children caught in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This would serve as a reminder to all parties of their commitments to children under international law and would work against the further politicisation of children in this conflict. A mutual and sincere commitment to the protection of all children from violence is a first step towards lasting peace.
